How Many Oceans Border the United States?
The United States is officially bordered by three oceans: the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the East, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The Arctic Ocean was added as an official border of the United States when Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended the Arctic Council.
Even though the Arctic Ocean only touches the state of Alaska, the Arctic Council determined that the United States should be involved in decisions regarding the future of the Arctic Ocean and the indigenous people that live on or near the Arctic Circle. The members of the Arctic Council include Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Canada, the United States and Russia.
In addition to oceans, the U.S. also borders several other bodies of water. In Alaska, there is the Bering Sea, and to the south below Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, is the Gulf of Mexico.
