Texas is 660 miles wide and 790 miles long. Texas is the second largest state in the United States; only Alaska is larger. Texas is the largest of the 48 contiguous states.

Texas has a total land area of over 260,000 square miles, making it 10 percent larger than France and twice the size of Germany. In 2013, Texas had a population of 24.6 million people with Houston as the most populous city. Texas is bordered by Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico. Most of Texas has an elevation of just over 1,700 feet and the maximum elevation is 8,794 feet at Guadalupe Peak.
