How Many Children Did Louis XIV Have?

Louis XIV had six children with his wife, as well as a number of illegitimate children resulting from several affairs, according to History.com. He is known to have fathered six children with Louise de la Valliere and seven children with Francoise-Athenais, Marquis de Montespan.

Of the six children born to Louis XIV and his wife, Marie-Therese, only one, Louis, survived to adulthood. Louis XIV also acknowledged many of the children born to his mistresses. Those who survived to adulthood were often legitimized and provided with royal titles. Although many of his affairs were public, not all of the offspring from these affairs were acknowledged or legitimated.
