The tundra biome is at the latitude of 65 degrees north, extending towards the North Pole and encircling the Arctic Ocean. It is the coldest biome and the simplest, at least in terms of flora and fauna diversity.
The term “tundra” is derived from the Finnish word “tunturi,” which means a barren plain. The biome generally experiences exceedingly cold temperatures, minimal precipitation and brief planting seasons.
The tundra biome is categorized into two types of latitudinal zones, the arctic tundra and the alpine tundra. The arctic tundra surrounds the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere and stretches across the southern region of the taiga biome while the alpine tundra is situated at extremely high altitudes.
