What Are the Four Major Regions of Texas?
The four major regions of Texas are the Mountains and Basins region, Great Plains, North Central Plains and Coastal Plains. Texas is the second largest state in the United States, encompassing a total area of 268,601 square miles.
The Mountains and Basins region of Texas is characterized by towering peaks, dunes, arid valleys and forested mountain slopes. The Upper Rio Grande Valley and West of Pecos River are sub-regions of this area. The North Central plains include the Grand Prairie, Rolling Plains, Cross Timbers and Prairie and Lakes sub-regions. The Coastal Plains are further divided into smaller regions, including the Blackland Prairie, Post Oak Belt, Gulf Coastal Plains, Piney Woods and South Texas Plains. The Great Plains, home to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, encompass the Panhandle, Edwards Plateau, Hill Country and Toyah Basin.
