The oldest known song in the world is a cult hymn written in the hurrian language 3,400 years ago. The tablet containing the song was discovered by archaeologists in the Syrian city of Ugarit in the 1950s.
The first music ever recovered is from 800 BCE and was also a religious hymn. The first recording of vocals accompanied by musical instruments dates to 700 BCE. In 521 CE, Greek notation, introduced to Western Europe by Bothius, was first used to create written forms of ancient folk songs. Bothius was also the first to write of opera as a musical form.
