Napoleon became a hero because of his victories in different wars that saw him rise rapidly through the ranks to become the army commander of the France. His major victory was defeating Austria in 1796 in a series of battles.
Napoleon helped to suppress an insurrection against the revolutionary government and was promoted to major general. He was known as an excellent strategist who had earned the respect of his army due to his bravery, planning and unconventional approach to battles. In 1799, Napoleon participated in the coup that overthrew the French Directory and established the Consulate. One of his major victories was defeating Russia and Austria at the battle of Austerlitz.
