Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address reminded people of the importance of equality for all men as laid out in the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln also expressed the gravity of maintaining a union of democracy in the United States.
In the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln contextualized the founding principles of freedom in the United States in terms of the current Civil War and reminded his constituents of the significance of a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The speech, which is now considered one of the greatest and best-known speeches in American history, was delivered on Nov. 19, 1863, during the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.
