Did Gandhi Have Any Brothers or Sisters?
Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had two older brothers, Laxmidas and Karsandas, and an older sister, Raliatbehn. Gandhi’s family were of the Vaisya-caste and considered fairly wealthy. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, as well as his grandfather, both served as chief minister of the Porbander state in India.
Gandhi’s brother Laxmidas went into law, becoming a treasury official for the government, and Karsandas became a sub-inspector of the police. Gandhi himself studied law at the Court of London, graduating as a barrister. Laxmidas, as the oldest brother, bore a large portion of Gandhi’s debt when the boy went to England for his studies. Gandhi was expected in return to work hard and help the family’s status rise when he returned.
