Lake Pontchartrain is not a true lake; it is actually an estuary or a tidal lagoon that is connected to the Gulf of Mexico through a narrow waterway, called The Rigolets, and Lake Borgne. Its waters are brackish, and it is home to abundant fish and aquatic birds. New Orleans is situated on the lake’s eastern and southern shores.
