What Is a Country That Starts With “W”?
Western Sahara is one of just two countries that begin with the letter “W,” the other being the Wallis and Futuna Islands of Polyneasia. The northwest African country of Western Sahara is bordered by Morocco to the north, Mauritania to the south, Algeria to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
The country of Western Sahara is rich in phosphate and rumored to have large, offshore oil deposits. Since 1976, most of Western Sahara has been in dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front, with the U.S. and other world powers taking a neutral stance and pushing for a peaceful resolution. The sparsely-populated territory is just more than 100,000 square miles in size and consists of mostly low, flat desert with small mountains to the south and northeast.
