Mexico is bordered in the south by the Pacific Ocean and the countries of Belize and Guatemala. The southernmost region of Mexico is characterized by volcanic activity and tropical geography.
The 600-mile southern border with Guatemala sees many unaccompanied child migrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador crossing into Mexico by foot and rail, especially near the border town of Tenosique. Due to this issue, the country made efforts in 2014 to step up its check points and border patrol along the southern border.
The United States borders the country to the north, while the Caribbean Sea borders Mexico’s eastern boundary. To its west is the Pacific Ocean.
