Geographically, Iceland is split between the North American and European continents; politically, Iceland is a part of the European continent. Iceland itself is splitting as the two continents continue to divide. Iceland is located in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the southern part of Greenland and west of the European mainland.

Iceland is the western-most part of Europe and it is a small country, similar in size to Kentucky. The population is also relatively low, with only 334,303 in 2017. The early population of Iceland consisted mainly of Irish immigrants, though many of them left in the 9th century when Norse immigrants arrived. Nonetheless, the Norse immigrants quickly set up a government, including a constitution and a council, which lasted well into the 13th century.
