What Cities Are in Northern California?
Despite the frequent attention given Southern California cities, some of the state’s biggest cities, and some of America’s most densely populated, lie in the north. Some of these important cities include San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Fresno and Modesto. According to the California Supreme Court Historical Society, the northern city of Sacramento, the state capital, has been the seat of government since 1854.
According to the city’s official site, San Jose is the largest city in Northern California and the 10th largest in the United States. With enormous advances in technological industry during the 1990s, San Jose grew exponentially, earning its name as the King of Silicon Valley. The second most populated city in the north is San Francisco, one of the major cities constituting the famous Bay Area. This is one of the most important economic centers of the state, and an area famous for cultural sites and travel attractions.
Modesto, located in the north central portion of California, is an agricultural center. Its visitor site highlights the fertile San Joaquin Valley, in which the city resides, as famous for its dairy and poultry, among other produce. In addition, the city boasts many other amenities and claims to fame, including being the home of George Lucas.
Oakland, San Francisco’s sibling city in the Bay Area, is home to one of the United States’ most important ports. According to the History of the Port of Oakland, the port itself is about 300 miles closer to Asia than Southern California’s ports, producing quicker shipping times and more efficient commerce. Sacramento, in California’s Central Valley, is home to the state capitol building, governor’s mansion and the state supreme court.
