The cheapest propane tank refills are usually available at dealers that just specialize in propane gas, appliances and equipment. Grocery stores and gas stations often have cheap tank exchanges that are convenient if travelling but not as cheap as filling up at a propane dealer.

Filling a propane tank from a bulk tank offers the most savings. U-Haul centers are common across the United States and often refill propane tanks inexpensively. When propane users exchange a tank, they often receive tanks that have 15 to17 pounds of propane in a 20-pound tank rather than a full tank. If a propane dealer is too far away, it is sometimes cheaper to exchange tanks.
