The body of water nearest to the coordinates 41 degrees north latitude by 112 degrees west longitude is the Great Salt Lake. It is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi, as well as the largest terminal lake in the Western Hemisphere.
The Great Salt Lake is the remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric lake that covered much of present-day, western Utah. The increased salinity of the lake is due to the fact that it has no outlets other than through evaporation; the salt content of the lake has been rising since the Bonneville Flood drained the majority of the lake away 16,800 years ago.
