While there are many facets to Tennessee, the state is perhaps best known for Nashville, country music and the Grand Ole Opry. Tennessee’s nickname is the Volunteer State because of the state’s volunteer soldiers during the War of 1812.
Tennessee is also home to Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, the Great Smoky Mountains and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Famous people that were born in the state include Aretha Franklin, Davy Crockett, Andrew Jackson and Justin Timberlake. Tennessee entered the Union on June 1, 1796, and it is the 16th state. The capital of Tennessee is Nashville, and its state slogan is, “America at Its Best.”
