China contains a land area of 9,596,960 square kilometers or 3,696,000 square miles. It is the third largest country in the world in terms of land area, behind only Russia and Canada.
China has a mainland coastline that is approximately 18,000 kilometers long. It has a land boundary of approximately 22,800 kilometers. China’s land area spans over 5,000 kilometers north to south and east to west; this land area is broken up across 22 provinces. In July of 2000, the population of China was estimated at approximately 1.262 billion people. According to estimates from the Central Intelligence Agency for July 2014, China’s population has grown to 1,355,692,576 people.
