The neighboring countries of Japan are South Korea, North Korea, Russia and China. Japan is an archipelagic nation situated in eastern Asia and surrounded by the North Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan.
The four main islands of Japan are Honshu, Kyushu, Hokkaido and Shikoku. The Korean peninsula is around 124 miles away from the island of Kyushu, while the Russian coast is separated by 186 miles from Hokkaido island, although the Russian island of Shakhalin is only 23 miles off Japan. The terrain of Japan is predominantly mountainous with frequent occurrence of seismic activities due to the numerous active volcanoes that encircle the country.
