Mexico is a country on the continent of North America. It is officially known as the United Mexican States, because it is a federal republic, or a collection of states united under a government, like the United States of America.
Mexico has a population of around 116 million people. It is made up of 31 separate states and one Federal District, Mexico City, which is the capital. Mexico declared independence as a country from the Spanish Empire in the 19th century, when it was declared a federal republic. Mexico is the 11th largest country in the world by land mass.
