What Language Is Spoken in Ethiopia?

The official national language of Ethiopia is Amharic, but 87 other languages are spoken in the country. The most widely spoken language in Ethiopia is Oromo, which around 33.8 percent of the population speaks.

Oromo is also the official working language in Oromiya. Around 6.2 percent of the country speaks Somali, the official working language of Sumale. Tigrayan, the official working language of Tigray, is spoken by 5.9 percent of the country, and Afar, the official working language in Afar, claims around 1.7 percent of the populations as speakers. Other languages spoken in Ethiopia include Hadiyya, Sidamo and Guragiegna; English and Arabic are common second languages. According to Ethnologue, many of Ethiopia’s languages are endangered.
