Where Does the Ganges River Start?

The Ganges River starts in the Himalayan mountains in India, in the state of Uttarakhand. The Ganges forms where the Bhagirathi River and the Alaknanda River meet.

The waters in the Bhagirathi River come from ice melt from the Gangotri Glacier. After the confluence of the Bhagirathi River and the Alaknanda River, the Ganges River flows through a narrow canyon out of the Himalayas. The Ganges then winds through India, where it is joined by many tributaries. The Ganges flows through Rishikesh, Chunar, Kolkata, Mirzapur and Varanasi. Ultimately, the river enters Bangladesh and flows out into the Bay of Bengal.
