What Countries Make up the British Isles?
The British Isles are the group of islands including Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Mann, and the Northern Isles. The British Isles contain the nations of Great Britain, comprised of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Many other islands also make up the British Isles.
The British Isles consist of over five thousand isles off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. The Republic of Ireland is a sovereign state, separate from the United Kingdom, but both are located on the British Isles.
The Isle of Man and, politically, two parts of the Channel Islands called the Bailiwick of Jersey and Bailiwick of Guernsey are also included in the British Isles. These are dependencies of the British Crown.
Great Britain is the largest island in the group and includes England, Scotland and Wales. Other islands in the British Isles include the Isles of Sicily, the Isle of Wight and Lundy Island.
