Russia is located in both Europe and Asia. The European portion of Russia is separated from the Asian portion by the Ural Mountains. Two of the country’s largest cities, Saint Petersburg and the capital city of Moscow, are located in European Russia.

Russia is the largest country in the world based on area and it is the ninth largest country based on population. About 25 percent of Russia is located in Europe, covering approximately 1,528,560 square miles. It comprises 38 percent of the continent. While 75 percent of the country is in Asia, only 23 percent of the Russian population lives there, at an average of 6.5 persons per square mile.
