What Is Considered the Midwest?
The states commonly considered part of the Midwest in the United States are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Smaller divisions of the Midwest are the East North Central Division, West North Central Division, Great Lakes and Great Plains.
The Midwest includes the states that were part of the Northwest Ordinance in the 19th century. Midwestern states that are part of both the East North Central Division and the Great Lakes region include Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. The West North Central Division includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska and South Dakota.
