What Would Cause a GE Dishwasher to Stop Draining?

Possible causes of a GE dishwasher not draining include the use of the wrong detergent, a clogged sink drain, blockage or kinks in the drain hose or a clogged air gap. Normally, 1 to 2 cups of water remain in the bottom of the dishwasher tub.
Dishwashers require special detergents that do not cause suds. Using hand dishwashing liquids or other suds forming detergents in the machine causes a drainage problem.
A clogged sink drain prevents the machine from draining. Many dishwashers drain into the garbage disposal. If food is left in the disposal without running it, the dishwasher water flows back into it after the pump stops. Running the garbage disposal before starting the dishwasher usually solves this problem.
Dishwashers connect to the home drain system using a small hose. Kinks in this hose or clogs inside stop the machine from draining. As of 2015, GE dishwashers come with white corrugated drain hoses that are less susceptible to kinks and blockage. These hoses are available to replace older styles.
Some local building codes require installation of an air gap. The water drains back into the machine if it clogs. Most are easy to clean by lifting off the chrome cover and removing the plastic cap underneath.
