Individuals who have gallstones or other gallbladder problems should avoid highly processed foods such as cake, pie and doughnuts as well as dairy products such as ice cream, cheese and butter, according to WebMD. Foods that are high in refined carbohydrates and fried foods are also problematic. Foods with high amounts of saturated fat, including red meat, can cause a more significant blockage of bile outflow in the gallbladder, worsening the symptoms of gallstones.

Those who suffer from gallstones may need to lose weight by eating a diet that is low in fat and cholesterol, as WebMD reports. Low-calorie diets aren’t a healthy solution, and individuals should manage weight loss with a healthy, well-balanced diet that provides a variety of essential nutrients, particularly fiber. A healthy diet includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Lean cuts of meat, poultry and fish are excellent sources of protein, and whole-grains, including brown rice, whole-wheat bread, bran and oats, are rich in essential vitamins and minerals.

Other considerations for those with gallbladder problems include drinking caffeinated coffee and alcohol in moderation, explains WebMD. As of 2015, studies indicate that small amounts of these beverages may help reduce the risk of gallstones. Peanuts and peanut butter have also been linked to reduced gallbladder surgeries.
