What Were Michael Jordan’s High School Stats?
In the fall of 1978, Michael Jordan, a sophomore at Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, was cut from the varsity team. He played on the junior varsity squad and tallied several 40-point games. During his two seasons of varsity high school basketball from 1979 to 1981, Michael Jordan averaged around 25 points per game.
As a senior, Jordan was selected to the McDonald’s All-American Team after averaging a triple-double: 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 10.1 assists. A triple-double is defined as a performance in which a player accumulates double-digit totals in three of five statistical categories — points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots — in a game.
Jordan’s performance during his senior season earned him a selection to the 1981 McDonald’s All-American Team and a chance to play in the annual All-American game in Wichita, Kansas. Jordan scored 30 points during the game and was given the Most Valuable Player Award after making the final two free throws to give his team the win.
Jordan also played varsity baseball while in high school, and during the 1980 season he pitched 45 consecutive innings without the opposing teams scoring a run. He was recruited by universities across the country for both his basketball and baseball talents, but he eventually accepted a scholarship to play basketball at the University of North Carolina.
