What Were the Major Accomplishments of Aphrodite?
Aphrodite, the goddess of love, helped mortals with daunting tasks, was mother to Cupid and partially caused the Trojan War. In Roman mythology, Aphrodite is named Venus.
Aphrodite helped Jason, a mortal, get the Golden Fleece. Eris, goddess of discord, was angry that she had not been invited to a wedding, so she planted a golden apple at a banquet table with the words “for the fairest.” Aphrodite, Athena and Hera quarreled over who deserved it, and Paris, a shepherd, was given the task of choosing between them. The three goddesses bribed him; Aphrodite offered him Helen’s love, Hera offered world domination, and Athena bribed him with victory. Paris chose Aphrodite, so she helped him kidnap Helen from Sparta. Her husband, the king of Sparta, then sought to get her back, and so began the Trojan War.
