Some washing machines, such as the Hotpoint 3.6 cubic feet top load washer, do not have a lid lock. As of 2015, the majority of washing machines are equipped with a lid lock.
Lid locks on washing machines are a safety feature that prevents individuals from opening the lid of the washing machine while it is operating. Lid locks reduce the risk of individuals, especially children, injuring themselves by placing their hands or arms into a spinning or agitating machine. Depending on the specific machine, problems with the door lock motor and switch assembly, door lock, or door latch may cause the lid lock to fail.
