How Do I Wash My Keds Sneakers?

Keds sneakers can be washed by hand; they can also be washed in the washing machine if it is done with mild detergent on the gentle cycle. The sneakers should be pretreated for stains and should not be put in the dryer.

Laces and inserts should be removed before doing any cleaning. Laces can be washed separately in the washing machine, or new laces can be bought. Bad stains can be treated with a stain remover, but it’s a good idea to test any product first to make sure it doesn’t damage the color of the shoes.

Use an old toothbrush or a soft bristle brush to remove dirt from the Keds sneakers before washing. Be sure to get rid of all dirt on the soles as well. Use liquid soap or shoe cleaner to scrub the shoes, scrubbing with a washcloth or soft brush. Blot away dirt and soap while washing. Make a paste of equal parts baking soda and water to scrub the soles.

If washing in a washing machine, add a small amount of mild detergent, then add the shoes when the machine has almost filled with water. Remove the shoes immediately.

Keds should not be put in the dryer; doing so is likely to cause the soles to separate from the tops of the shoes. Instead, stuff them with clean paper towels and set them in the sun to dry.
