Does Walgreens Sell Syrup of Ipecac?
According to the National Capital Poison Center, ipecac syrup is still considered an over-the-counter product, but it is unavailable in most drugstores. The safest procedure for dealing with poison consumption is to call the poison center at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Association of Poison Control Centers both agree that ipecac syrup should not be kept at home, notes the National Capital Poison Center. Similarly, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering making it a prescription-only drug. Originally, pediatricians recommended keeping the syrup at home for emergencies such as a child ingesting poisonous substances, but the associated benefits were proven to be false.
