The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration requires state residents to get an emissions test performed on their vehicles every 2 years, as of 2014. The test is performed at a vehicle emissions inspection program, or VEIP, station.
There are several VEIP stations located throughout different regions of Maryland. The inspections consists of several tests to determine if the vehicle is running efficiently in order to reduce the amount of smog. The tests vary depending on the exact vehicle. Failing to obtain an inspection at least once every 2 years can result in a driver’s license suspension. The VEIP usually reminds motorists 6 to 8 weeks before the test needs performed with a notification in the mail.
