How Do You Use a Steering Wheel Puller?

Use a steering wheel puller by disconnecting the battery, and removing the air bag and retaining nut. Attach the puller to the holes in the steering wheel using the appropriate bolts, and slowly tighten the large screw on the puller against the steering column.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground

Disconnect the ground lead from the battery before beginning any work.

  2. Remove the airbag

Loosen the screws from the back of the steering wheel. Lift the entire airbag unit from the steering wheel, and disconnect any wires. Store the unit in a safe place where static electricity does not cause it to expand.

  3. Remove the retaining nut

Use a wrench to loosen and remove the retaining nut that holds the steering wheel in place. Set the nut aside in a safe place.

  4. Attach the wheel puller

Determine the appropriate bolt size needed to attach the puller to the steering wheel. Put the puller in place, insert the bolts through the arms, and tighten them into the steering wheel holes.

  5. Remove the wheel

Use a wrench to tighten the center bolt against the steering column. Work slowly to pull the wheel loose. Once the wheel breaks free, remove any electrical connections before attempting to remove it from the car.
