How Do You Use Sample Parole Letters?

A sample parole letter is used as a guide or template for writing a parole board support letter for an offender under review for early release. Sample letters often give friends and family of the inmate ideas of what they might include in their letter and what grammar and writing style is most appropriate.

Parole support letters offer evidence that an offender who is coming up for parole has ties to the community and an employment and living situation conducive to him becoming a productive member of society. The letters are usually sent to officials by family and friends of the incarcerated but, in some cases, the offenders send the letters themselves. The parole board considers how many letters it receives as well as who wrote them and what they say, often giving additional credibility to letters from lawyers and public officials.

Before writing a parole support letter, review several sample letters, and check the rules and guidelines of the state’s parole board. If possible, ask someone at the parole board for recommendations. The letter should be as short as possible and contain only relevant facts and not opinion or emotion, establishing the character of both the offender and the letter-writer. It should be written in clear and concise English without spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.
