The country code for the United States is 1. Country codes are digits used in phone numbers to identify various countries. This code is used before area codes and local numbers. The United States shares its country code with Canada, Puerto Rico and other U.S. Territories.
When dialing a U.S. phone number from an international location, the country’s exit code is required before the destination’s country code. For example, most European countries have an exit code of 00, so calling from France to the United States requires dialing 001 before the area code and local number.
The exit code for the United States is 011 and must be used when dialing another country from inside the United States.
