Some types of wrinkle-free fabrics include Dazzle, permanent press and synthetics. With permanent press fabrics, cotton fabric is treated with various chemicals that prevent wrinkling. Some permanent press items include a mixture of fabrics, such as polyester. Some people prefer not to wear permanent press because it sometimes contains formaldehyde. The permanent press setting on many washing machines maintains moisture content to reduce wrinkling.

Dazzle is a fabric that is often used in sports uniforms. It can be identified by the pattern of small holes in the fabric. It’s often made from synthetic fibers or blends of cotton and synthetics, and it is smooth and shiny. Dazzle is a very durable fabric.

Synthetic fabrics are man-made and include rayon, nylon, spandex, acrylic and polyester. Chemically produced fibers are used in creating the fabric. Chemicals used in the manufacturing process include sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide, which come from natural gas, coal or oil. Waterproof fabrics are made from synthetic fibers. Stretch fabrics like those used in swimsuits typically are made from synthetic fibers. Some critics argue that the chemicals used in making synthetic fabrics harm the environment and human health. The fabrics are not biodegradeable, and when clothes are discarded, the chemicals can leach into the surrounding soil.
