Different Ford vehicles require different types of color-coded coolant, with at least four different coolant types in use in Ford vehicles as of 2016. The best way to determine the coolant type for a given vehicle is to consult the car’s or truck’s owner’s manual.
Ford vehicles built before 1999 exclusively use light green coolants, so it is generally safe to use standard green antifreeze in these vehicles. However, vehicles built since 1999 may use dark green, yellow or orange antifreeze depending on the model. For example, most vehicles built in 2013 use orange-colored coolants, but motor homes and Econoline vans continued to use yellow coolant in that model year.
