What Are All of Tyler Perry’s “Madea” Films in Order?
The Madea series began with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” followed by “Madea’s Family Reunion,” “Meet the Browns,” “Madea Goes To Jail,” “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” and “Madea’s Big Happy Family.” “Madea’s Witness Protection” and “A Madea Christmas” are the most recent, as of May 2015.
Madea was created by Tyler Perry, who also plays the character. In 2015, an animated film, “Madea’s Tough Love,” was released, with Perry voicing the character. Madea first appeared in live theater, as the play version of “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” was released in 1999. The “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” movie was released in 2005. Most of the Madea films are based on a previous play.
The character has made guest appearances on multiple television shows, including “House of Payne” and “Love Thy Neighbor.” The television show “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” is based on the play and film versions of “Meet the Browns.” Although Madea is mentioned multiple times throughout the TV series, the character never appears.
Perry appeared as Madea in the comedy short “Byreeen: The Baby Mama from Hell.” The character has been parodied multiple times, including in “Scary Movie 5.”
In 2006, Perry wrote a book from Madea’s perspective, titled “Don’t Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings.”
