A triangle inside a circle represents the Sobriety Circle and Triangle Symbol used by the Alcoholics Anonymous group. The equilateral triangle represents unity, recovery and service in response to the physical, mental and spiritual parts of the disease of alcoholism. The surrounding circle represents wholeness or oneness and symbolizes serenity and perfection.
The symbol traces its roots to several native cultures, with priests and medicine men regarding the circle enclosing the triangle as a means of warding off evil spirits. AA co-founder Bill Wilson chose the symbol to represent the power of the mind and body in warding off the evil spirits leading to addiction.
