The traditional gift in celebration of a 23rd wedding anniversary is silver plate. Some examples of silver plate gifts include picture frames, jewelry, cuff links, wedding certificate holders, door knockers, clocks, platters, drink ware and ornaments. According to Hallmark, the theme for the 23rd wedding anniversary is air. Gift ideas include balloons, hot air balloon rides and airline tickets.

As the years progress, the value of the gifts gradually increases. For example, while the traditional first anniversary gift is paper, a 20th anniversary gift is china, and the 30th anniversary is pearl. The 40th anniversary gift is ruby, and the 60th anniversary is diamond. Some years have different traditional or modern recommendations for gifts. For example, the fifth anniversary’s traditional gift is wood, but the modern gift is silverware. Likewise, the 10th anniversary traditional gift is tin or aluminum, while the modern gift is diamond jewelry. Many anniversary years, including the 23rd, only have a traditional recommendation.

The tradition of choosing an anniversary gift that is based on the amount of years that the couple was married dates back to the Middle Ages. In the beginning, only the first, fifth, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th and 75th anniversaries were assigned associated gifts. The American National Retail Jeweler Association created a more complete list in 1937.
