Australia does not have a single traditional dress, uniform or costume, but an Australian national dress style has emerged based on identity, climate and lifestyle. Dress can include indigenous designs and can be characterized by both the migrant experience and cultural borrowing, which are part of Australian history.
Australian dress has been influenced the rugged country living experience as well as swimming, surfing and beach culture. These styles are reflected in the fabrics used, such as drill cotton and moleskin. The local and individual dress styles are different than Australia’s fashions. Localized bushwear dress was adopted in 2007 by the Australian Prime Minister to be worn by world leaders at the APEC Summit or Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation.
