What Is the Time Period of “Pride and Prejudice”?

Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” is set in England during the Napoleonic Wars, which were fought between 1797 and 1815. This is also the period during which Austen completed work on the novel, which was her second, after “Sense and Sensibility.”

Austen originally finished the manuscript for “Pride and Prejudice” — originally titled “First Impressions” — between 1796 and 1797. After a publisher rejected it, Austen put the manuscript aside. She returned to it in 1809 and made revisions. The novel was finally published in January 1813. Austen wrote four other novels: “Mansfield Park,” “Emma,” “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion.” The last two novels were published in 1818, the year following Austen’s death.
