Where Do Ticks Commonly Hide on Your Body?
According to naturalist Debbie Hadley for About.com, ticks are most commonly found in warm areas where they are able to easily hide, such as within the hair, behind the knees, between the legs, under the arms and sometimes in the belly button. Ticks hide on the body to keep warm and go undetected so they are able to feed for longer periods of time without being noticed.
Is it common to unknowingly carry a tick on the body until the insect gets larger and engorged with blood, making it easier to sense. When a tick eats its fill, it detaches itself from its host and falls off of the body. Tick bites are not painful and are therefore easy to miss. Ticks carry Lyme disease, which is a detrimental bacterial blood infection that is difficult to diagnose and treat, notes WebMD.
To avoid getting a tick bite, Hadley recommends wearing a repellent containing at least 20 percent diethyl-meta-toluamide, or DEET, on all areas of exposed skin, making sure to avoid contact with the eyes and mouth. DEET may need to be reapplied throughout the day to ensure that it continues to work. Hadley also recommends wearing protective, brightly colored clothing, such as hats and long pants tucked into a pair of thick hiking boots, while spending time outdoors in potentially tick-infested areas.
