English tea time is usually from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. According to What’s Cooking America, tea is typically served with tiny sandwiches, scones and other pastries. During tea time, savory food is offered first, followed by scones and sweets.
Traditionally, lower class citizens in England would have tea at around 4 p.m. However, according to Afternoon Tea, middle and upper-class citizens would have tea around 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The later tea times often replaced traditional dinners. Tea times taken around the dinner table were referred to as “high tea.” Tea times taken in the sitting room were referred to as “low tea.” The terms “high tea” and “low tea” are actually named for the height of the tables used during tea times.
