Symptoms of bilateral renal cysts include fever, upper abdominal pain, back pain and side pain, according to Mayo clinic. Other symptoms include frequent urination and blood stained urine, notes Cleveland Clinic. In very rare cases, renal cysts can impair kidney functions, states WebMD.

Renal cysts become bilateral when they are present in both kidneys. If there are a number of them in both kidneys, they become known as multiple bilateral cysts. Also referred to as kidney cysts, renal cysts often do not cause any symptoms, and they are mostly diagnosed by a doctor through an X-ray, ultrasound or CT scan when a patient is visiting a doctor for a different reason. Renal cysts become problematic when they enlarge to the extent of pushing against other organs in the stomach, states Cleveland Clinic. The cysts also become an issue when they burst and start to bleed or become infected.

Renal cysts do not need any treatment unless they cause complications, according to WebMD. To treat a renal cyst, a doctor punctures the cyst using a long needle through the skin. After draining the cyst, the empty pouch is filled up with an alcohol based solution to harden the tissue and prevent recurrence.
