The pearl symbolizes purity and innocence. It is the oldest gem known to mankind and has a lot of folklore behind it, as well as some scientific truths.

The pearl is the only gemstone found inside a living creature. Mollusks and oysters both create them. Depending on which birthstone list a person looks at when shopping, five different months are deemed to be the month of the pearl by different opinions. Wedding dresses and bridal jewelry are adorned with pearls because of the stone’s significance of purity and innocence. In Hindu tradition, the wedding ceremony includes a ritual of presenting an intact pearl and piercing it as a part of the festivities.

Folktales of the peal are plentiful and relate to the stones coming from Heaven in the form of raindrops or angels to the oysters and mollusks. The pearl’s significance is almost as old as the stone itself, and a fragment of the one worn by a Persian princess is on display at the Louvre museum in Paris, France.

Pearls are not only found in oysters and the mollusks of the ocean, but in fresh water mussels as well. The freshwater pearls are shaped differently from the round pearls of the ocean, but they hold the same meaning of perfection, innocence and purity.
