Ares, the Greek god of war, has several symbols that are associated with him, including the spear and helmet. Less common symbols include armor and shields.
Several animals associated with Ares are dogs, vultures, serpents, woodpeckers, barn owls, and eagle owls. Ares’ chariot was said to have been drawn by four fire-breathing horses.
The Roman god Mars was considered by the Romans to be a more civilized version of Ares. The planet Mars was named after the Roman god. There are few temples dedicated to Ares, as the people did not want to overly glorify the dark associations of war.
