Each zanpakutō can have three forms. The first form is a sealed state in which the sword has no powers. When a soul reaper learns the name of his zanpakutō, the sword releases its powers. This is the shikai form, which refers to initial release. The final stage is bankai, or full release. This form of zanpakutō is difficult to master, and only a few soul reapers have achieved this stage.
