What Do Suzuki ATV VIN Number Codes Mean?

Like the vehicle identification number, or VIN codes of all vehicles, those on Suzuki all-terrain vehicles identify a particular ATV with its country of origin, manufacturer and production year. This vehicle identification number follows a 17-character format standardized in 1981 by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

All Suzuki motorcycles and ATVs manufactured since 1981 have a 17-character long VIN. The number uses uppercase characters and numerals, each position indicating an identifying factor. For example, the first digit represents the country of manufacture while the second represents the manufacturer. A Suzuki ATV made in Japan would start with the characters “JESS” followed by characters that indicate the following details:

  • Type of vehicle
  • Body style
  • Type of engine
  • Assembly plant
  • Vehicle serial number
